Can somebody give me any advice about ceramics and clay?

I just joined art club with my friends, and I'm a charcoal/pastel/paint person. I'm really into dark things, so I was going to make a comedy/tragedy mask set but I don't know where to start. Clay is so confusing to me, but it's something I'd like to learn. Any tips or pointers so vI don't suck?
