What can you tell me about the Confederate States of America?

I am Australian so I don't know much about American history. What can you tell me/where can I find information about the Confederates. Any good books you recommend? I want to write a story about a Confederate soldier who fell in love with a YANKEE wench who broke his heart. Any ideas?
