A question for charcoal and pastel artists?

I've tried a lot of the cheap brands like Van Gogh and cannot find any that are high quality. (Obviously). I'm willing to spend a few extra $ if someone can give me a brand that sells pastels that are rich and smooth. Does anyone possibly have thier own recipe for beautiful colors, any secrets you'll give up? I do oil painting too if you have secrets about enhancing paint colors.
